During the month of January, the fifth and sixth grade students of Washburn had the opportunity to take part in learning about African culture and music by participating in a one-week residency with Michael Wingfield, offered through The L/A Arts program.  Over the course of three 45-minute sessions, Michael taught the students how to play African drums, including how to properly hit the drum, how to count out specific rhythms, and how to speak a little bit of the African language through songs and conversation.  The younger grades also worked with Michael and his drums as an introduction to the culture and music of Africa.  At the end of the week, the whole school participated in a demonstration of African rhythm and song.  The fifth and sixth grade students showcased their new-found knowledge of drumming.   A great time was had by all.
